In particular, the TiC coating on HSS yielded a slightly higher value of 5.0 × 10 −7 mm 3 /Nm counterbody wear rate compared to that of the TiC coating on 304-SS of 3.9 × 10 −7 mm 3 /Nm. This is despite the notably lower coating wear rate when using a HSS substrate compared to the 304-SS.
Adjacent to TiC cermet, a continuous Ni-rich layer is found at the interface between the interlayer and TiC cermet substrate. The multilayer granular structure of Ti–Al system and TiC are found in the reaction products. It is noted that void is inevitable in the reaction products and the density is enhanced with the increase of joining pressure.
Conclusions. The TiC-Fe 3 Al cermet was successfully fabricated in situ by mechanical milling and hot- press sintering. Following is a summary of the findings and conclusions drawn from the microstructural observation and mechanical testing of the fabricated cermet samples.
